Why is my AC not cooling?
Most no-cool calls in Fort Myers come down to five usual suspects. Work through the checks below in order; if the unit still runs warm, our 24/7 Fort Myers emergency crew can take it from there.
Start with the thermostat and the filter
Confirm the thermostat is on COOL and the setpoint is below the room temperature, then pull the filter. A filter clogged with coastal dust and pet hair chokes airflow, and restricted airflow is the single most common reason a Fort Myers system blows warm or lukewarm. If the filter is gray and matted, replace it and give the system an hour before judging the result.
Look for a frozen evaporator coil
Open a return-air grille or peek at the indoor unit: ice or frost on the coil or the refrigerant line means the coil has frozen, usually from dirty airflow or low refrigerant. Switch the system to FAN ONLY for a few hours to thaw it, replace the filter, and restart. If it freezes again quickly, the refrigerant charge or the metering device needs a licensed technician.
Check the outdoor unit is actually running
The fan and compressor in the outdoor condenser must both run. If the fan spins but the cabinet is silent and warm air sits still, a capacitor, contactor or compressor issue is likely — those parts fail often after storm-season power flickers. Never poke at the electrical panel yourself; capacitors hold a charge.
Refrigerant leaks and SWFL salt air
Low refrigerant shows up as a warm supply register, a hissing sound near the coil, or ice on the line set. Coastal salt air is hard on line sets and coils, so leaks are more common here than inland. Recharging a leaking system without fixing the leak wastes the charge — the leak has to be found and repaired first.
When to stop troubleshooting and call
If the basics are clean and the system still will not cool, stop there. Repeated breaker trips, burning smells, water around the air handler, or ice that returns after thawing all deserve a same-day visit. Our Fort Myers emergency cell answers around the clock and carries the parts the usual failures need.
